NanoFlex’s sponsored research programs with the University of Southern California and the University of Michigan have resulted in an intellectual property portfolio consisting of more than 600 issued or pending patents worldwide covering materials, architectures, and fabrication processes for organic and inorganic flexible, thin-film photovoltaic technologies. NanoFlex, via Global Photonic Energy Corporation, has exclusive worldwide commercial license rights to all of the patents and their attendant technologies. We believe that we are the gate keeper through our intellectual property portfolio to any company seeking to develop and commercialize either thin film organic photovoltaics or cost effective and flexible thin film Gallium Arsenide (“GaAs”) modules.
NanoFlex's licensing approach allows the Company to focus on basic science innovation and expanding and strengthening our intellectual property portfolio while allowing existing manufacturers the ability to retool and produce products containing the Company's small molecule organic photovoltaic (“SM-OPV™”) and inorganic GaAs technologies. For access to the Company's technologies, patented materials and know-how, such manufactures will pay NanoFlex up-front and ongoing licensee fees and/or per-unit royalties.
Currently, we are entering the applied research and pre-commercialization stage for both of these technology platforms with the near-term goal of establishing a Technology Development Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This will allow us to both upsize our laboratory prototypes to a much larger industry-acceptable scale and it will enable us to work closely with industry partners and government agencies to develop and commercialize their desired applications.
NanoFlex's founding team has twice before created significant shareholder value by forming successful companies to advance transformational technologies from the basic science stage through to commercialization. These predecessor companies are pioneers in organic semiconductors and digital wireless communications technologies and have generated significant revenues and substantial shareholder value through the intellectual property developed by the companies, which is then licensed to industry manufacturers.
